“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return.”

While some will argue that “Secular Lent” is an oxymoron, I think there can be enrichment found by all who wish to find it in the practice of Lent. You may not opt to go to Mass and participate in the imposition of ashes that the members of the Catholic/Apostolic church often do, but you can strive to be mindful and intentional in giving up something that either doesn’t serve you or otherwise detracts from greater good. Alternatively, you could choose to mindfully ADD something that better serves you and others. Religion aside, Lent is a time of reflection and contemplation and I think that is something we could all use. I’ve always liked the imagery of coming from and returning to ashes and dust, similar to the concept of the Tree of Life.

Despite the HOURLY idiocy of MTG, I’ve decided to ditch “the comments” for lent. No more negatively engaging with strangers on social media, despite how incorrect they are (two hours into Lent, I could taste metal!) And I will also work to be more mindful about conservation. Waste less, avoid frivolous spending, make coffee instead of buying it, etc. obviously I will go back to being an absolute keyboard flaming, Amazon whoring, dunkie junkie as soon as my feet hit the floor on Easter morning, but luckily I’m an Episcopalian so I’m already forgiven!
